Beat the floods

With Climate Change has become a fact of life and will remain with us for many years.

We have always had flooding but not on the scale we are experiencing or about to experience. Why? The answer is fairly straightforward. 

1. Trillions of tons of melting polar icecaps raising levels of the oceans.

2. The warming ocean – as water heats it expands

3. The warming ocean has put more moisture into the atmosphere.

4. Rainfall now comes in deluges instead of regular amounts we had before.

In Queensland Australia This year we have seen at least 500,000 herd of cattle wiped out by severe rainfall when 3 years of rainfall fell in one week. This was following the worst drought in living memory.

We have seen town and city streets turn into raging rivers in a couple of hours around the world.

Coastal storm surges will now penetrate further inland than we have seen in the past. There are solutions to this scenario but will not stop the flooding any time soon so Adaption is the name of the game.

There is one nation that has lived with this for hundreds of years and that is the Dutch. They have become the world’s experts on this subject and its engineers are in demand throughout the world. Homes can either be designed or adapted. Those who have an existing home especially in the USA who would like to make their home float there is an excellent website www.buoyantfoundation.org . Remember some homes that float are what they call amphibious i.e. they normally sit on the ground unless a flood occurs when they will rise and float with the water. They normally sit on a concrete foundation anchored to four large poles set into the concrete. This means they don’t rock but only rise and fall with the flood level.
